Self Storage: Keeping America’s Asset Covered

By October 15, 2025Insurance

The U.S. has more self-storage facilities than the rest of the world combined.

Over 52,000 facilities in the U.S. alone. Fewer than 10,000 in all of Europe, and only a few thousand across Asia. Nearly 90% of the world’s supply is right here, which honestly just makes sense.

Self-storage is as American as it gets. Invented here in the ’60s, it took off in the suburbs and today it’s one of the steadiest, most cash-flowing corners of CRE.

Insurance doesn’t grab the headlines for asset classes like this, but it’s what keeps the machine humming when things get ugly. Lots of risks will go unnoticed until they’re staring you in the face. A good program is what keeps rent checks coming in and protects tenants, so the business stays steady even when the unexpected happens.
