Rising Premiums? Here’s How to Stay Ahead with the Right Insurance Partner

By Wyatt Rickles — Three Arbor Insurance

It’s no secret that insurance premiums are on the rise. From commercial auto rates increasing year after year—even with clean loss runs—to excess policies costing more for less coverage, and general liability carriers tightening their requirements, businesses are feeling the impact.

If you’re a business owner, these rising costs can feel completely out of your control. But with the right agent, you can regain some influence over your renewal process. Not sure what to look for? Here are a few key things to keep in mind to make sure your agent is managing your insurance premiums effectively:

  1. Renewal Timeline:
How much notice do you get before your policy renews? Is your agent transparent about their process? It’s important that your insurance carriers understand what your company does and how you manage risk. Remember, there are real people behind those premium numbers—your agent should be communicating your story, not just accepting the first quote that comes in.

  2. Renewal Process:
Are you receiving your renewal documents on the due date, or well in advance? Ideally, your agent should provide your renewal notice, premium estimate, and a market report at least 30 days before your renewal date. This gives you time to review, ask questions, and, if needed, seek a second opinion before you’re locked in for another year.

  3. Year-Round Support:
Does your agent check in only at renewal time, or are they engaged throughout the year? Risk management is an ongoing process. Your agent should be proactive, making sure your insurance program keeps up with changes in your business and presenting your company in the best possible light to carriers.

Not all agents approach insurance the same way—and that’s a good thing. But if you’re seeing rising premiums without a matching increase in revenue, it may be time to take a closer look. With the right agent and the right process, you can gain some control in an insurance market that often feels stacked against you.
