Do I need Workers compensation if I work from home?

As more and more people shift to remote work, many may assume that workers’ compensation insurance is no longer necessary. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, workers’ compensation insurance is just as important for remote workers as it is for those working in traditional office settings.

It’s worth noting that workers’ compensation insurance is often required by law. Failing to carry the required insurance could result in fines or other legal consequences. Even if you are a freelancer or independent contractor, you may still be required to carry workers’ compensation insurance depending on the state you live in and the type of work you do.

Each state regulates workers’ compensation insurance. For example, in Alabama, businesses need five employees before requiring work comp insurance. If you hire an employee in a different state, you should consult with your insurance provider about how many employees are required for worker’s compensation.

Another reason to consider workers’ compensation insurance as a remote worker is that it can provide peace of mind. Knowing that you and your employees are covered in case of an accident or injury can help alleviate some of the stress and anxiety that comes with remote work.
